TIPO Adds Post-Filing Application and Online Specification Editing Functions to the Patent Online Application System

The Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO), Ministry of Economic Affairs, announced that its “Patent Online Application System” has added post-filing application functions for utility model and invention patents, as well as an “Online Specification Editing” function, providing applicants with more comprehensive online services.

As the patent application process continues to become digitalized, enterprises will be able to use more convenient online tools when handling patent applications, case changes, rights maintenance, and document management, thereby improving filing efficiency and reducing the costs associated with paper-based correspondence and version control.

Key Features Added to the System

The new post-filing application functions for utility model and invention patents cover multiple patent procedures, including requests for reexamination, succession to or licensing of the right to apply for a patent, changes involving patent rights, and other requests such as third-party observations, restoration of priority rights, and registration of or changes to agents.

To address application document layout and content formatting requirements, the system has also added an “Online Specification Editing” function that supports the editing of abstracts, specifications, claims, and drawings for utility model and invention patent applications. Applicants can insert images, add tables and paragraph numbering, and apply text styles such as superscript, subscript, bold, and italics within the system, making the handling of application documents more flexible.

Subsequent procedures may still involve amendments, changes, licensing, changes in rights, restoration of priority rights, updates to agent information, or third-party observations. • Retain Internal Authorization and Rights-Change Records: If succession to application rights, licensing, or changes in patent rights are involved, enterprises should also retain internal resolutions, contracts, and relevant supporting documents.
• Establish a Case Deadline Tracking System: Procedures involving amendments, responses, restoration of priority rights, and rights maintenance may all be subject to deadlines. A regular tracking and reminder system is recommended.
